Water Experience

It continues to amaze me how many early career professionals comment on how good it is to have a non-male mentor in research (maybe every six weeks or so, someone mentions it to me). I was also surprised when one of my undergraduate students indicated they thought it was important I had a 'you are welcome here' rainbow sticker on my computer. I currently have an undergrad working in my group who has thanked me no fewer that four times for providing a workplace where the feel safe. None of this should be necessary in Canada in the 21st century. When I suspect someone is interested in advocacy I tell them I'm old enough and established enough to speak out freely and clearly, in addition to making the point that if there is anything they'd like to discuss that I am there for them.
