Patricija Marjan is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Biology at University of Waterloo. She is involved in a project that researches potential applications of environmental DNA (eDNA) as a biomonitoring tool to assess fish populations in the Grand River tributaries. Currently her research focuses on developing a method for brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) eDNA implementation in lab-based and field-based settings. A long-term goal of Patricija’s research is to improve the eDNA method and to subsequently couple it with the Next-Generation Sequencing that will provide a more detailed insight in fish population dynamics and will contribute to the overall advancement of the “next generation solutions to ensure healthy water resources for future generations”.
