Prairie Water vAPM 2021: Week 2

Wetland Water Chemistry

To close-off Week 2, we have a set of three videos. These projects focus on wetlands on the prairies, how they process nutrients, like nitrogen, and how land management decisions impact nutrient loading.

In the first video, Amy Hergott, a Masters of Environment and Sustainability at the University of Saskatchewan, explains her project's findings. Her research focuses on how wetlands process nitrogen and zooms in on two key processes to retain nutrients in wetlands. She also compares how their rates vary by nitrogen source and over the season.

The second video showcases work by Lauren Dyck, who is also a Masters of Environment and Sustainability at the University of Saskatchewan. Her work looks at drivers of greenhouse gas dynamics in wetlands. Like Dr. Egina Malaj and Laura McFarlan, whose videos were shared in Week 1, Lauren also utilizes our prairie wetland survey for her research.

Our final video is by Dr. Emily Cavaliere, a post-doctoral fellow with the University of Waterloo and the University of Saskatchewan. Using the virtual modelling approach developed within Prairie Water, Emily is producing estimates of total phosphorus concentration in prairie streams. This work will eventually be linked into climate and land management scenarios, allowing us to explore different potential futures of  water quality changes.
