This working project develops new web-based and app-based decision support systems that allow researchers, communities, and end-users to easily control models and to visualize model outputs in ways that are relevant to the decisions at hand. Features of these tools will allow users to collaborate (both in real-time and asynchronously) over model and simulation workspaces and support navigation and analytics of big data. This will include web applications for visualization of spatio-temporal hydro-climatic variables, web applications for decision support systems such as mobile decision theatres and decision-support notebooks.

In six years, the package will design innovative visualizations tools and design elements to ‘humanize’ water management activities and consequences of decision-making. We will also develop an independent real-time system with multiple design choices to enhance user experience and collaboration in participatory learning exercises. Collaboration with stakeholders is also a big factor in this working package to envision and incorporate alternative visual representations of scenarios and trade-offs emerging from Theme C of the research program and participate in the GWF Visualization Steering Committee.

Below is an example of the GWF Decision tool currently undergoing development.

Y1: Georeferenced photographs at key locations in the Saskatchewan River Delta with accompanying videos and visualization of basic water levels using simple digital elevation model. Design elements added to support navigation, storage and communication of big data.

Y2: Additional performance metric impacts visualized via multi-media content along key points in the basin. Additional design elements added to ‘real-time collaboration mode’ (e.g. giving one user control over other user interactions).

Y3: Development of ‘visual interface mode’ to disseminate results of the intercomparison project for the Nelson-Churchill (see WP A6).

Progress so far:

(i) A web application for visualization of spatio-temporal hydroclimatic variables is developed, available online and usable by GWF researchers, and under ongoing development. (See http://gwf-demo.usask.ca/v-12/; )
(ii) An early pilot of a web-based decision support system focused on water resources modelling and scenario analysis is online and under ongoing development. (See https://gwf-hci.usask.ca/#/ )
